The new hospital is due to open in 2009. In addition to this, a new 102 bed mental unit will also be built on the Edith Cavell site, and this is due to open in 2008. Great Eastern Run
The Great Eastern Run took place on Sunday 15 October this year after a 10 year absence from the city’s sporting calendar. Over 3,000 runners took part in either the half marathon or the five kilometre fun run, and the streets of Peterborough were lined with supporters cheering them on. The event was organised by Peterborough City Council, and was backed by Perkins Engines, who provided the main sponsorship, as well as Premier Kitchens and Bathrooms and Advanced Performance. Walking For Health
Walking For Health Peterborough is a scheme which offers short (1-3 miles) walks led by trained volunteers. Everybody is welcome on the walks, but particularly welcome are those trying to increase their daily activity levels, people who have or are at risk of experiencing poor health, and those who may feel isolated and are keen to meet new people. There are currently 14 ‘Health Walks’ across the city most of which are in parks and green spaces, and individuals can choose to walk with groups to suit their needs. Fit-OK
Fit-OK (Family Intervention & Therapy for Obese and Overweight Kids) is a community-based service comprising of obesity specialist practitioners. Data collected in 2004 showed that approximately 25% of local school children were classed as overweight, with 8% classed as obese. These worrying data have prompted action, with the setting up of the Fit-OK programme which involves in-depth analysis of a child’s diet, activity levels and fitness, and the development of a family care plan.
