University provision for Peterborough

Peterborough Regional College and Anglia Ruskin University are working on plans to establish a University Centre in Peterborough. Peterborough Regional College already offers 20 degree level programmes accommodating around 850 students, but the development of a University Centre would further enhance this provision allowing more local people to study to degree level. The University Centre is to be built on the current Regional College campus, close to the new Thomas Deacon Academy, creating a new “education quarter” for the city. It is hoped that this will contribute to the regeneration of Peterborough by enhancing higher education provision and providing new and exciting economic opportunities.

John Clare Cottage – a centre for learning

Funded by a £1.3 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and numerous donations, work is underway to restore the cottage in Helpston in which John Clare, the renowned nineteenth century poet, was born and lived for many years. The cottage was recently bought by the John Clare Education & Environment Trust, and is being restored to its 18th century state. It is hoped that the cottage will host groups of schoolchildren who will come to the centre to learn more about life in Clare’s time and about the natural environment which features in much of his work. In addition to this, the project will help to preserve an important part of local and national heritage. For more information, please go to

Perkins Learning Centre

Funded by a £290,000 grant from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) Perkins opened a Learning Centre in May 2006. Working with local colleges, the new centre offers a range of courses designed to improve Perkins employees’ literacy, maths and IT skills, as well as providing English as a second language courses. Whilst the courses are mainly open to Perkins employees and their families, the centre also provides tuition for 15 and 16 year old students on the LEAP (Learning Education Achievement and Partnership) programme which allows pupils who did not reach their potential in mainstream education to pick up their studies and develop skills they can use to get a job. City Centre Masterplan

A number of key sites in the city centre have been identified for redevelopment including Queensgate and North Westgate, the heart of the city and Bridge Street, the Station area, the South Bank and Rivergate. The plans are based on several key objectives including the improvement of current shopping facilities, the development of the city as a major destination for cultural, leisure and sporting attractions, improving housing provision, gaining business investment and also investment in education and training. Preliminary work on the project has begun following the unveiling of the £250 million plans to redevelop North Westgate.

Alwalton Hill – Gateway Peterborough

Gateway Peterborough LLP, a joint venture between Peterborough based Frenbury Properties and Simons Developments of Lincoln, has been given the green light to develop Gateway Peterborough, a £140m warehouse and distribution park, in collaboration with Milton (Peterborough) Estates Company on their 119 acre site at Alwalton Hill.

The outline planning application lodged with Peterborough City Council (PCC) on 3 March was given outline approval by PCC’s Planning Committee on 27 June 2006. Following this approval, an extensive newt survey is being conducted in order to ensure that the building work does not disturb these creatures and that they can be safely collected and relocated. The scheme is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010, and up to 2,500 new jobs will be created as a result.

Hampton

Hampton, Peterborough’s newest township, is located to the south of the city on a 1,000 hectare site which once housed as many as 19 brick works. Now the site has been transformed into a thriving new community with homes for up to 18,000 people, extensive recreational and leisure facilities, school provision for both primary and secondary school age children, medical facilities and an impressive shopping complex in the shape of Serpentine Green Shopping Centre which opened in February 1999 and houses 17 retailers. In addition to this, developers have created Cygnet Park, a commercial park designed to meet the demands of business in the 21st century. Developers have also pledged to provide community parkland for Hampton’s residents, and the first phase of 86 acres of parkland at Hampton’s Crown Lakes has already opened. Indeed, 50% of the development area is being left as open spaces, nature reserves and lake areas, and a Nature Reserve of approximately 300 acres is being set aside to protect the Great Crested Newt colony and rare water plants showing the developers’ commitment to the environment.
