Greater Dogsthorpe neighbourhood management project

Peterborough receives £1.6 million for neighbourhood renewal

Peterborough has received £1.6 million from the Safer & Stronger Communities Fund - Neighbourhood Element.  It has been awarded to an area of Dogsthorpe Ward that is in the 3% most deprived areas nationally.

It has been agreed with local residents and partners that the money will be spent in
Dogsthorpe and similarly deprived, immediately adjacent areas of Park and North wards.

The overall aim of the funding is 'to improve the quality of life for people living in
disadvantaged neighbourhoods and to ensure that service providers are more
responsive to neighbourhood needs and improve their delivery'.

We know from a number of other schemes up and down the country that the most
successful way to achieve this is via neighbourhood management.

Neighbourhood management models vary from area to area but basically they allow
services that are provided in neighbourhoods to be co-ordinated and focused to local
needs, duplication avoided, gaps in service provision to be addressed, and local
residents to be involved in decision making. To achieve this we employ a
Neighbourhood Manager and a team of staff that will be dedicated to working in
the neighbourhood.

A neighbourhood partnership has been formed made up from local residents, ward councillors
and service providers from both the statutory and voluntary & community sectors.
This group makes the decisions and oversees the work of a smaller project group
that undertakes more detailed work. Peterborough City Council is the accountable
body. Support is provided at every stage from Government Office for the East of
England.

A full delivery plan was submitted to Government Office on 21 February 2006. The project will begin on the 1 April 2006.
